Original Diptych Oil Painting on Venetian Plaster & Canvas: "Queen of the Night," 4' x 4'
A rare encounter with the luna moth will leave you forever enchanted. This beautiful and delicate creature exists in the form of winged poetry of for only 5-7 days, but lives forever as an indelible memory. Seeing a luna moth is widely considered an auspicious and spiritual event symbolizing transformation, rebirth and new beginnings. Entirely nocturnal, these mystical creatures represent finding light within darkness and remind us to embrace each moment of a short and beautiful life.
Measuring a total of 4’ x 4’, this piece is a diptych that began as a pair of 2’ x 4’ canvases. I enjoy texturizing my canvases with various media that layer depth and structure onto my substrate. These are coated with thick layers of Venetian plaster to create a stacked and sculpted feel, and then detailed with subtle impressions of shapes and marks for the paint layers to settle into. I paint in many very thin layers, often wiping off paint to leave only a stain of color. As these transparent layers grow over my drawing, they become alive and vibrate together with energy.
